Osprey Learning Center is located in the town of Garberville, CA,
population 1200, 205 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101. Osprey
serves students at every grade level from every community in a rural
school district the size of Rhode Island. Osprey is a vehicle for
providing alternative education in the Southern Humboldt Unified School
District.
The school was established to serve as an alternative placement
for students whose learning styles, lifestyles or personal beliefs make
attendance at a traditional school difficult or unsatisfactory. Osprey is a
two school facility, housing a continuation high school and an alternative
education school that serves students grades K-12. Osprey currently serves
150 K-12 students, half of which live on rural homesteads. The school
also houses the Southern Humboldt Adult Education school, which serves 40
students.
Casterlin Elementary, Blocksburg
Casterlin School is located in a mountainous, isolated corner of Southern
Humboldt County, one hour east of Garberville. Casterlin is a K-8 school.
Most of its students live in the towns of Alderpoint, Blocksburg, and Ft.
Seward, the sub-divisions of Larabee, Rancho Sequoia, Dobbins Creek or on
individual homesites.
Casterlin School includes four classrooms, a
library-computer center, gym-lunchroom, kitchen, office and Special
Education classroom. Enrollment at Casterlin ranges from 95 to 117, with a
certificated teaching staff of four, six teacher's aides, and a part-time
secretary.
