For the last five years Friends of the Eel River (FOER) has carried out a campaign to restore California's Eel River to its wild and free state, primarily through the removal of two massive, outdated, and destructive dams. This action will open up hundreds of miles of prime spawning grounds.
FOR THE SALMON SINCE 1983:
The Eel River Salmon Restoration Project, a Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations affiliate organization, was established in 1983 in an effort to enhance the salmonid runs in the South Fork of the Eel River and thus benefit the sport and commercial fishery
The American Fisheries Society (AFS), founded in 1870, is the oldest and largest professional society representing fisheries scientists. AFS promotes scientific research and enlightened management of resources for optimum use and enjoyment by the public.
AmeriCorps is the national service movement that engages thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds in a domestic Peace Corps -- getting things done across America by meeting our education, public safety, environmental, and human needs.
The Watershed Stewards Project
WSP is committed to conserving, restoring, and sustaining natural habitats for
future generations by linking education with high quality scientific practices.
IRN supports local communities working to protect their rivers and watersheds. We work to halt destructive river development projects, and to encourage equitable and sustainable methods of meeting needs for water, energy and flood management.
Our website is designed primarily for watershed groups working to restore and protect salmon habitat. We've done the legwork to filter the tremendous amount of available information on protecting and restoring watersheds that are home to salmon. We've done our best to include only the most useful material on this website.

The Northwest Fisheries Science Center is one of five research centers of NOAA Fisheries (the National Marine Fisheries Service), and is responsible for providing scientific and technical support for the management, conservation, and development of the Pacific Northwest region's anadromous and marine fishery resources. Its multidisciplinary research--involving fisheries science, marine biology and ecology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, oceanography, and aquaculture--is conducted in cooperation with other agencies (federal, state, local, and tribal), universities throughout the world, Pacific Rim and European countries, and in support of international treaties.
The Instititue for Fisheries Resources is a not for profit organization dedicated to the study, protection and enhancement of both marine and anadromous biological resources on the Pacific coast of the United States and Canada. The Institute is independent of but affiliated with the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations (PCFFA) -- the largest organization of commercial fishermen on the west coast. PCFFA has long been involved in resource conservation and protection issues, and the Institute for Fisheries Resources is expanding and carrying on PCFFA's 24-year conservation tradition.
Connect directly to Lower Eel page of US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds "Surf your Watershed" site. It's fun to find your own watershed and learn about the natual resources there. --Also Featured within "Surf Your Watershed" is the "Adopt Your Watershed" site, which includes a list of more than 4000 watershed groups nationwide as well as tools to help new groups get started. This is a good site for people who want to get involved in watershed work to find a local organization to join.
